Stump Removal Methods

Stumps can be a real eyesore to your landscape, not only because they are unsightly, but also because they take up valuable space that could otherwise be used for other plants and landscaping features. Stump Removal is a job best left to the professionals, whether you are looking to get rid of a single stump that was part of a felled tree, or multiple pesky stumps scattered throughout your yard. If you do decide to tackle the task yourself, it’s important to weigh all the pros and cons of each method so that you can make the right choice for your yard and your budget.

Digging – One of the most common methods for stump removal is digging it out by hand with a shovel. This can be a labor-intensive task, especially for larger stumps, but it is effective and inexpensive. Just make sure you have plenty of water and a sturdy pair of gloves.

Burning – Stumps can be removed by burning them, but this is a dangerous and time-consuming process. First, you need to drill holes into the stump and pour kerosene or fuel oil into them. When it’s time to light the fire, be sure to rope off the area to prevent children and pets from being burned. Also, check with your local fire department about rules and regulations regarding open-flame burning.

Rotting – This option is available to those who aren’t in a hurry and don’t mind waiting years for the stump to decay. Fungi that feed on wood are responsible for the rotting process, and they need to have access to oxygen to do their work. Cutting the stump as close to ground level as possible and covering it with soil will help speed up the rotting process.

Chemical Treatment – Stumps can be treated with chemicals to speed up the natural decomposition process. Typically, these chemicals contain potassium nitrate, which works by providing more oxygen to the bacteria that break down wood fibers. The problem with this method is that it can harm nearby plants and cause environmental problems if over-applied, and it may be too toxic for some types of trees.

Stump Grinding – Professional stump grinding services grind down the remaining stump and roots with special equipment, which is fast, effective, and relatively inexpensive. This is the preferred method for most homeowners, as it provides a smooth and even surface that’s ready for grass or other landscaping features. Plus, it minimizes the risk of pest infestations like termites and carpenter ants from taking up residence in the hollow center.
